Public Education

The Round Rock School District is a highly recognized educational institution in Texas, serving northwest Travis County and southern Williamson County communities. With 110 square miles, the district encompasses diverse environments, from bustling urban centers to rural farmland. 

It includes all of Round Rock and parts of Austin and Cedar Park. The district boasts ten middle schools, five high schools, two alternative learning centers, and 32 elementary schools, serving around 45,000 students.

In 2010, the district expanded with the opening of Cedar Ridge High School and a 31st elementary school in Stone Oak’s subdivision, while a ninth-grade center became a middle school. 

With a student-teacher ratio of 16 and an annual dropout rate of only 1.1% for grades 7-12, the district delivers high-quality education. A testament to this, over 77% of graduating seniors take the ACT and SAT exams, achieving well above national and state averages. 

The property tax rates in the district are more significant than the national average, but the investment pays off in the schools’ outstanding performance.

The Round Rock School District made headlines in July 2010, with its annual report revealing that 25 schools received the highest ” Exemplary ” rating from the Texas Education Agency. This was the most significant number of schools to receive this accolade among all the suburban districts in Texas. 

These schools included Westwood High School, Walsh, Cedar Valley middle schools, Canyon Vista, Spicewood, Forest North, Brushy Creek, Laurel Mountain, Caraway, Fern Bluff, Great Oaks, Teravista, Cactus Canyon Creek, Ranch, Deep Wood, Robertson, Sommer, Live Oak, Old Town, Pond Springs, Jollyville, Blackland Prairie, Union Hill, Forest Creek, and Gattis elementary schools. 

In 2010, the independent school district was rated “academically recognized,” a noticeable improvement from the previous year when it was rated “academically acceptable.”

Higher Education

Round Rock is a hub for higher education opportunities. In 1990, the city saw the creation of the Texas State University Round Rock Campus, which was brought to life under the leadership of Bob Bennett (city manager), Joe Vining (planning director), and Mike Swayze (resident). 

Their vision was to attract colleges and universities to collaborate in providing education, training, and degree programs on both a full-time and part-time basis. The center used empty buildings around town and initially focused on training programs for local businesses, such as Dell Corporations, which had specific needs.

In 2008, the Avery Building was established as the first facility of the educational campus, with the joint efforts of Austin Community College, Texas State University, and Temple College. 

The campus aimed to offer a broader range of academic opportunities, specialized training, and diverse degree programs, including postgraduate degrees. Moreover, the campus is in the middle of the Avery Center development, which also houses A&M Health Science Center, Seton Williamson, and other medical facilities.

By the close of 2009, the programs had enrolled 1,700 students, and Texas State University took the lead position in this initiative. Additionally, it was gifted 100 acres of land for the building and future buildings by Round Rock’s Avery family, whose ancestors were early settlers.

Round Rock also has the Texas A&M Science Health Center, which opened in December 2010. The campus will expand over time with as many as 17 different buildings, subject to funding by the Texas Legislature.

In August 2010, Austin Community College opened its largest campus next to the State University center in Texas. However, ACC is building five more buildings, with a total area of 250,000 sq. feet, to house up to 5,000 students in its initial phase. All three Round Rock campuses are located near each other within the rapidly growing Avery Farms development.

The latest addition to higher education is at Texas State University, the School of Nursing, part of the College of Health Professions. Furthermore, the College of Health Professions also offers various other programs, including health services research, health information management, and physical therapy.
